Jammed Key

We thought the instructions were clear.
Three locks, three keys, each one painted to match: red key, red lock… simple, right? Apparently not. This moment in the Google Escape Room in Singapore is one I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
One team jammed the red key into the green lock and twisted it with all their might, snapping it clean off. At the time, it wasn’t funny, but I look back now and it gives me slight chuckles. I remember how, just like that, the game came screeching to a halt, the room got quiet, and everyone just… stood there.
It’s funny now, but in the moment it was a perfect reminder of something I still see in teams every week. What feels obvious to you as a leader isn’t always obvious to the people following you - and perhaps what feels like enough information might not be. That’s one of the biggest lessons in both leadership training and team development training: clarity matters.
We rewrote the brief: “Keys must match locks by color.” We never had the problem again. Sometimes, clearer instructions are the best escape plan. This is exactly the type of insight that comes to life in our leadership escape room training. In an immersive escape room Singapore setting, simple assumptions quickly reveal how communication gaps can block progress - and how quickly alignment can transform a team’s performance.
